How Nature Improves Your Mind
Authored by Kyle Golden (May 16, 2023)
With the modern, fast-paced lifestyle most of us live, society is facing high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. The good news is that one of the simplest ways to improve mental health could be right outside our door - by spending time in nature. Since this could be an easy and inexpensive way to distress, let’s explore how being in nature can help improve mental health.
Reduces Stress
Spending time in nature has been shown to decrease the level of cortisol, the stress hormone, in the body. Fresh air, the calming sound of birds chirping, and naturally beautiful scenery can help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Even a short walk in the park can have a positive impact on your mood.
Improves Mood
Being in nature can also help improve your mood. Exposure to sunlight can help increase the production of serotonin, a hormone that regulates mood, sleep, and appetite. This can lead to feeling happier and more positive. In addition, being in nature can help reduce symptoms of depression.
Boosts Self-Esteem
Nature has a way of making us feel connected to something greater than ourselves. This sense of awe and wonder can help boost self-esteem and provide a sense of purpose. Spending time in nature can also provide a sense of accomplishment, especially if you engage in physical activities such as hiking or rock climbing.
Connection with Nature
In today's fast-paced world, we often forget our connection to nature. Being in nature can remind us of our place in the world and help us feel grounded. It can also help us appreciate the beauty of life and find meaning in it.
Now, Get Outside!
Want to get out and have a therapeutic reconnection with the outdoors? Luckily here in Austin there are many ways to get outdoors and experience what mother nature has to offer:
Take a hike in the woods or a walk in the park. With so many urban trails and parks the choices seem limitless. Try a new trail in Brushy Creek, St. Edward’s Park, or Walnut Creek. For a list of trails in the Austin area visit https://www.austintexas.gov/page/trail-directory
Go camping and spend a night under the stars. When the weather is nice of course! Nearby state parks like Colorado Bend State Park are just waiting for you to visit. https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/colorado-bend
Take a trip to the beach and enjoy the sound of the waves. Texas is lucky enough to have mountains, desserts, plains, forests, and yes - beaches! Padre Island National Seashore is a great place to escape city life and get in some salt water r and r. https://www.nps.gov/pais/index.htm
Plant a garden or spend time in a community garden. There are many organizations and businesses ready and willing to help turn your yard into a beautiful oasis of flowers, herbs, and vegetables for birds, bees, and other animals. Check out one of the many nurseries around for advice like https://gardenseventeen.com or visit the City of Austin’s Grow Green page https://www.austintexas.gov/department/grow-green to learn more about sustainable landscaping practices.
Volunteer for a local conservation group or park cleanup. There are many wonderful opportunities to get outside, help beautify our city, and connect with others. For example, you could get involved with the Pease Park Conservancy. Find out more here https://peasepark.org.
These are just a few of the many activities that can help people feel more connected to nature and reap the mental health benefits that come with it. So, take some time to explore the great outdoors, even if it’s just a short walk in the park. Your mental - and physical - health will thank you.
