It’s About Time
Authored by Kyle Golden (January 5, 2024)
January is often a time for setting resolutions. Many of us pledge to start or stop doing something, such as eating healthier, spending less, or exercising more. However, one universal obstacle, particularly when focusing on health, is… time.
Questions and statements like, "Where do I find the time to exercise?" or "Preparing healthy meals takes too long!" are common. It seems there's never enough time to focus on health because our days are consumed by numerous other tasks.
It's a fact of life that we all have the same 24 hours in a day. The sun rises and sets, the clock ticks, and the world keeps spinning at the same pace for everyone. Regardless of whether you're a busy parent, a determined entrepreneur, or a retired couple living leisurely, we all have the same amount of time. Yet, some people accomplish more in a day than others do in a week. How is this possible? The answer lies not in the amount of time we have, but in the choices we make and the priorities we set.
Every day, we make decisions that determine how we spend our time. Some choices are conscious, such as deciding to hit the gym or watch TV. Others are unconscious, like scrolling through social media, which is designed to distract us and steal our attention. Each choice, whether conscious or unconscious, shapes our day and ultimately, our life.
The key to accomplishing more isn't to add more hours to the day, but to make wiser decisions about how we use the time we have. This begins with identifying our priorities. What matters most to you? Your health? Your career? Your family? Once you know your priorities, you can make decisions that align with them. You can have multiple priorities, but some will take precedence over others.
For instance, if health is a priority, you might choose to exercise for an hour each day instead of watching TV. If you want to cook healthy meals, you might need to end your workday earlier to have time in the kitchen before dinner. If family is a priority, you might choose to read to your children for an hour each night instead of browsing social media.
So if you find yourself this year saying “I just don’t have the time!”, remember time is precious and finite. How you spend it determines your lifestyle. Each minute spent is one you can't regain. Therefore, choose to spend your time wisely and on the things that matter most to you. After all, it's not about having more time, it's about making time.
