Setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals for Success

Whether you are looking to make a positive change to your health, your finances, or your relationship, it’s hard to make an impactful change without having some goals to work toward. Without a goal you are left to the chances of what life gives you without direction, and that rarely does anyone any good. When starting a journey in creating a more fit, healthy lifestyle you need to set a few goals. A Healthy Lifestyle Coach can help keep you accountable and guide you through the tough times life will throw at you.
At Vireo Coaching I ask my clients to set S.M.A.R.T. goals. This means their goals should be Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time Sensitive. For my clients I ask that these goals, with regard to their lifestyle coaching with me, be kept to the areas of physical fitness, plant-power nutrition, and healthy habits and mindset.
S.M.A.R.T. goals need to be specific enough that it’s something you and others can recognize. You should be able to measure your goal in some manner. You should be able to take action toward meeting the goal. The goal needs to be realistic to you. Finally, a time frame for reaching this goal also needs to be set.
I encourage my clients to begin by writing down two short-term goals and at least one long-term goal. Studies have shown that actually writing down your goals is important for success. We then work at addressing the other aspects of meeting those goals and how we will measure and track them.
It’s important to realize that everyone has setbacks. Life will always throw curveballs that could cause you to reconsider any aspect of your goal including the goal itself. Being flexible and open to adapt your goals should be part of the process. Knowing and accepting this can help keep you motivated during the tough times of your goal achieving journey.
