Mental Health Awareness
Authored by Kyle Golden (May 2, 2023)
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Throughout the month I will create short posts relating to mental health and the importance of its awareness. Incorporating more life coaching techniques into my practice recently, I recognize that we have a lot to learn about the mind and how to help those who suffer from mental illness.
Being aware of mental health is important because it helps to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. It encourages people to seek help when they are struggling with their mental health, and it promotes the fact that mental health is just as important as physical health. Mental health awareness month provides the opportunity to educate about different types of mental health conditions and the resources that are available for people who are struggling.
Here are some tips for improving mental health:
Practice good self-care, including exercise, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep
Connect with others by talking to friends or family, joining a support group, or seeing a therapist
Engage in activities that bring you joy and a sense of accomplishment
Learn and practice stress management techniques, such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or yoga
Limit/reduce/avoid alcohol and avoid drugs
Seek help if you are experiencing symptoms of mental illness, such as persistent sadness, anxiety, or changes in mood or behavior.
Remember that mental health is just as important as physical health, and it is okay to ask for help when you need it. For more information on mental health visit nami.org.
