Mental Health Awareness All Year
Authored by Kyle Golden (May 31, 2023)
As May comes to an end, let's remember to always be aware of our mental health and that of others, not just during the month of May. Here are a few tips to help improve mental health throughout the year:
Practice Self-Care
Self-care and mental health are important aspects of one's overall well-being. In order to make a plan to prioritize them, it is crucial to first understand what self-care and mental health mean. Self-care can encompass a range of activities, such as exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, and engaging in hobbies that bring joy. Mental health refers to one's emotional and psychological well-being, which can be influenced by factors such as stress and trauma.
To make a plan to prioritize self-care and mental health, it can be helpful to start by identifying areas in one's life that may be causing stress or anxiety. From there, one can brainstorm different self-care and mental health strategies that may help alleviate these feelings. Some examples might include setting aside time for meditation or mindfulness practices, seeking therapy or counseling, or participating in social activities that bring joy and connection.
Go Online
One way to find support for mental health is by using online resources. Websites like BetterHelp and Talkspaceoffer online counseling and therapy sessions with licensed professionals. Additionally, there are online support groups and forums where individuals can connect with others who share similar experiences. Another option is to use mental health apps, such as Headspace and Calm, which provide guided meditations and mindfulness exercises to help manage stress and anxiety. By utilizing these online resources, individuals can access mental health support from the comfort of their own homes.
Seek Help
One option to consider for ongoing support is to seek in-person therapy or counseling. This can provide a safe space to discuss and process any challenges or emotions that may arise. Additionally, therapy or counseling can offer helpful tools and strategies for coping with stress and managing difficult situations. It is important to find a qualified and experienced therapist or counselor who can provide the support and guidance needed. This may involve researching different professionals, asking for recommendations, or consulting with a medical provider. Remember that seeking help is a sign of strength and can lead to greater emotional well-being and resilience.
Keep Talking
It's important to keep the conversation going and continue to spread awareness about mental health. One way to do this is by attending mental health events and conferences, such as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) annual conference. Additionally, volunteering your time at a local mental health organization or donating to a mental health charity can help support the cause and keep the conversation alive. Another way to spread awareness is by sharing your personal mental health journey with others. By opening up about your struggles and experiences, you may inspire others to do the same and help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
